New Mexico United Academy

Overview

The youth academy of New Mexico United (USL Championship), competing in the USL Academy League. The academy serves boys U16-U19 and operates as a fully scholarshipped program — all costs (training, uniforms, travel, accommodation, meals) are covered through the Somos Unidos Foundation.

Business Model

Free to players. Funded by the Somos Unidos Foundation. This model is designed to remove financial barriers and provide a direct path from youth to professional play with New Mexico United.

Structure

  • U16 and U19 age groups (league minimums/maximums for roster size)
  • Regionalized competition to limit travel
  • USL Academy Cup (mid-season event)
  • End-of-season playoff event
  • Individual Player Priority Plans for development tracking

Investment Thesis

The NM United Academy is a competitive threat to paying youth clubs (NM Rapids, NMSA) at the U16+ level. Top talent may choose the free USL Academy pathway over paid ECNL/MLS Next, suppressing premium pricing power for elite age groups. However, the academy only serves a small number of elite players and does not compete at younger ages (U5-U15), where clubs generate most of their revenue.

Open Questions

  • How many players are in the academy?
  • What is the Somos Unidos Foundation’s annual budget for the academy?
  • How many academy players have signed professional contracts with NM United?
