Overview
Professional reserve league launched in 2022 by Major League Soccer, replacing USL affiliation agreements. Serves as the bridge between mls-next (youth academy) and MLS first teams. Targets U17-23 age range.
Structure
28+ teams as of 2025, composed primarily of MLS reserve/II sides plus a small number of independent clubs. Operates a spring/fall split season aligned with MLS calendar.
Player Pathway
Sits directly below MLS in the domestic pyramid. Players cycle between MLS NEXT Pro rosters and MLS first teams on two-way contracts. Above usl-academy and usl-league-two in the developmental hierarchy for MLS-affiliated players.
