MHSAA (Michigan High School Athletic Association)
Overview
The Michigan High School Athletic Association governs high school athletics in Michigan, including boys and girls soccer. Not a club soccer league, but its rules and calendar directly affect the competitive club ecosystem.
Structure
- Boys soccer: Fall season. 473 teams, 14,112 participants (2024-25, up 1.1% YoY).
- Girls soccer: Spring season. 466 teams, 11,090 participants (2024-25, up 0.7% YoY).
- Divisions: Four divisions for both boys and girls, organized by school enrollment size.
- Combined total: ~25,200 high school soccer participants.
Club Soccer Interaction
The MHSAA enforces a Limited Team Membership Rule prohibiting students from competing with non-school teams during the HS season. Girls soccer (spring) has the most acute conflict with club calendars. The MHSAA has created regulated exceptions rather than strict prohibition. Penalty for violations: minimum 3-game ineligibility.
Current Trajectory
Participation recovering post-COVID for three consecutive years. Boys soccer participation in 2022-23 was 13,221; now at 14,112. Girls soccer went from 11,921 to 11,090 (slight decline but stabilizing).
