Ohio Champions League / OSPL / COPL

Overview

Ohio’s integrated three-tier state league system for youth soccer, serving teams above the recreational level from U7-U19. The system launched the top tier (OSPL) in Fall 2021 and allows players to move freely between tiers within the same club.

Structure

Tier 1 — Ohio State Premier League (OSPL)

  • Top division; single “State Division” tier
  • Launched Fall 2021

Tier 2 — Central Ohio Premier League (COPL)

  • One to three Elite Divisions (upper-mid level)
  • Premier Divisions (mid level)

Tier 3 — Ohio Champions League (OCL)

  • Blue Division (upper level)
  • Red Division (mid level)
  • White Division (lower level)
  • Founded 2009

Player Pathway

Players can move freely between OSPL, COPL, and OCL within the same club. This flexibility reduces switching costs and allows clubs to place teams at the appropriate competitive level without changing organizations. The system sits below national-tier leagues (ECNL, MLS NEXT, Girls Academy) but above purely recreational leagues.

SYNRGY Relevance

Any club acquired in Ohio will likely have teams competing in this three-tier system. Understanding the OSPL/COPL/OCL structure is essential for evaluating a club’s competitive breadth and player retention model.
