National Premier Leagues (NPL)
This article covers both the Boys' and Girls' NPL. For the parent organization and full NPL Finals results, see US Club Soccer.
Overview
The National Premier Leagues (NPL) is a nationally unified, regionally based youth soccer platform managed by US Club Soccer. Serves both boys and girls in the U13—U19 age groups. The NPL is the primary competitive league operated by US Club Soccer, sitting below the ecnl in the competitive hierarchy.
Scale (2024—25): 18 member leagues across 6 geographic regions. The 2025 NPL Finals drew 204 teams from 139 clubs across 26 states.
Structure
How It Works
- Clubs register with a regional NPL member league
- Teams play regular-season competition within their member league
- Top teams from each league qualify for the NPL Finals — the national championship
Member Leagues (2025—26)
18 member leagues spanning the country — see US Club Soccer for the full list. Key additions:
- 2024—25: Frontier Premier League, Mid-Atlantic Premier League
- 2025—26: Chesapeake Premier Soccer League (Maryland/DC clubs)
Divisions
For 2024—25, the NPL introduced Gold Division (most competitive) and Black Division across all six boys’ age groups and the U13 girls’ division to accommodate growth.
Age Groups
U13, U14, U15, U16, U17, U19
NPL Finals

Club Requirements
- Must be a member of an NPL member league
- Registration through US Club Soccer
- Competitive standards set by individual member leagues
- Fees vary by member league
Player Pathway
NPL sits below ecnl in the US Club Soccer competitive hierarchy:
General competitive → NPL member league → NPL Finals → (aspire to ECNL)
- The NPL is the primary pathway for competitive clubs not at the ECNL level
- NPL Finals provide national exposure and college recruiting opportunity
- Many NPL clubs aspire to ECNL-RL or ECNL promotion
Economics
- Fees set by individual member leagues, not centrally by US Club Soccer
- NPL Finals entry fees passed through to qualifying clubs
- Generally more affordable than ecnl due to regional travel patterns
- Estimated family cost: $3,000—$7,000/year (varies significantly by league and region)
Champions
See US Club Soccer for comprehensive NPL Finals champions tables (2021—2025).
Dominant NPL regions:
- Minnesota NPL: 5 champions at 2025 Finals (St. Paul Blackhawks, Minneapolis United, St. Croix Academy, Prior Lake SC, Manitou FC)
- Mid-Atlantic Premier League: 5 champions at 2025 Finals (first year as member)
- NISL NPL Division: 3 champions at 2025 Finals (Illinois Elite, Chicago Fire Youth)
- Red River NPL: Americas FC, Fever United, Sting SC — consistent girls’ champions
Current Trajectory
Growing steadily. Key dynamics:
- New member leagues: Chesapeake Premier Soccer League joining for 2025—26 continues geographic expansion
- Division tiers: The Gold/Black division split signals enough depth for meaningful tiered competition
- Pathway clarity: NPL is increasingly positioned as the clear step below ECNL in the US Club Soccer hierarchy
- Minnesota dominance: Minnesota NPL clubs win a disproportionate share of national titles, suggesting either stronger development or weaker competition in other regions
Open Questions
- What are the specific fees charged by US Club Soccer for NPL participation vs. member league fees?
- Is there a formal promotion pathway from NPL to ECNL-RL?
- How does the NPL compete with the NAL for second-tier clubs?
