National Academy League (NAL)
Overview
The National Academy League is a boys’ and girls’ national youth soccer competition platform positioned just below the top tier (mls-next / girls-academy). Founded circa 2023, with roots in the National Academy Championships tournament format. The NAL operates independently while working closely with MLS NEXT and Girls Academy programs.
Mission: Provide world-class training, development, education, and competition opportunities for select soccer clubs.
Scale: Multiple regional conferences with 50+ member clubs. Age groups U11—U19 (broader than most national leagues, which start at U13).
Role in MLS NEXT ecosystem: NAL is the dominant conference operator for the mls-next Academy Division, running 12 of the 19 total Academy Division conferences (63%) for 2026—27. This positions NAL as the primary infrastructure provider for MLS NEXT’s second tier, making it a critical partner to MLS operationally. The other Academy Division conference operators are Cobalt Sports (2 conferences), Elite Academy League (3), Cal North Soccer Association (2), and Sporting Development League (1).

Age Groups
U11, U12, U13, U14, U15, U16, U17, U19
The inclusion of U11 and U12 is distinctive — most national platforms begin at U13.
Competition Format
- Regular season matches within conferences
- Points accumulation through conference play
- NAL Championship: End-of-season event for conference champions and wildcard qualifiers. College-scouted environment
- High school soccer compatibility — players can compete in both NAL and high school programs
Sanctioning
NAL operates through US Youth Soccer state associations, with player registration flowing through clubs and state associations. This is a key difference from ecnl (sanctioned by us-club).
Age Group Alignment
Beginning 2026—27, the NAL will adopt a seasonal age-group format (aligning with school years rather than birth years).
Club Requirements
Clubs join through an application and selection process. Requirements include:
- Demonstrated development capability
- Adequate coaching credentials
- Organizational stability
- Specific fee structures not publicly disclosed
Player Pathway
The NAL positions itself just below the top tier:
NAL → MLS NEXT / Girls Academy (top tier) → College / Professional
- Provides a development pathway for clubs not in MLS NEXT or GA
- College exposure through NAL Championship and league play
- Players can move up to MLS NEXT or GA programs
- Compatible with high school soccer participation
Economics
Cost to Families
Not publicly disclosed. Expected to be in the $4,000—$8,000/year range, lower than top-tier mls-next or ecnl due to more regional travel patterns.
Revenue Model
- Club membership fees
- Championship event entry fees
- Registration through state associations
Champions
NAL Championship
Limited historical champions data available. The NAL Championship is an annual event but specific winners by age group and year have not been publicly reported in detail.
2025 NAL Championship and 2026 NAL Championship events are scheduled but detailed results require additional research.
Current Trajectory
Emerging as the dominant infrastructure operator for MLS NEXT’s second tier. Key dynamics:
- MLS NEXT Academy Division primary operator: NAL runs 12 of 19 Academy Division conferences — this is not a peripheral role but the central operating function of MLS NEXT’s second tier. This dramatically elevates NAL’s strategic importance.
- Positioning below MLS NEXT: The NAL fills a clear gap for clubs that want national-level competition but don’t meet Homegrown Division requirements or want more flexibility
- USYS sanctioning: Operating through state associations rather than US Club Soccer positions the NAL in a different governance ecosystem than ecnl-rl
- Younger age groups: The U11—U12 divisions serve clubs wanting earlier competitive development
- High school compatibility: Unlike the old Development Academy, NAL allows dual participation with high school soccer — a significant selling point for families
- Geographic concentration: Heavy Northeast and Midwest presence, with the Heartland Conference anchored by Sporting Kansas City affiliates
- Growth trajectory: Adding 4 new conferences in 2026—27 as the MLS NEXT Academy Division expands to 318 clubs total
