Girls Academy ASPIRE

Overview

Girls Academy ASPIRE is the official second tier of the Girls Academy (GA) competitive structure, launched in February 2025. It is designed to expand access to elite girls’ soccer competition while maintaining a performance-based pathway upward to the GA’s top-tier league.

ASPIRE’s league operations are managed through a strategic collaboration with the Development Player League (DPL), which brings seven seasons of league management expertise.

Scale (2025-26): 120+ clubs participating across multiple conferences.

Structure

Age Groups: U13 through U19 (matching the GA top-tier structure).

Gender: Girls only.

Conferences (2025-26):

  • Multiple regional conferences with geographic alignment
  • Midwest Conference — split into East Division and West Division
  • Mid-Atlantic Conference — split into North and South divisions
  • Additional conferences covering West, Southwest, Southeast, Northeast, and other regions

Competition Format:

  • Regional league play providing high-level competition with geographic alignment
  • Regional and National Showcases for college recruiting exposure
  • National Championship at each age level (U13-U19) at the end of each season

Tiered Structure within GA Ecosystem:

  1. GA (Top Tier) — highest standards, strongest competition
  2. ASPIRE (Second Tier) — performance-based pathway upward
  3. DPL — additional competitive tier
  4. DPL Open — broadest access level

Club Requirements

  • Application-based: Clubs must apply and meet specific criteria for acceptance
  • Open to all clubs — not limited to existing GA member clubs
  • GA member club benefit: ASPIRE provides a platform for second teams, allowing clubs to retain and develop emerging talent
  • Performance standards: Clubs must demonstrate commitment to player development and competitive standards

Fees (2025-26):

  • League fee: $1,000 per team ($6,000 per club due upon signing)
  • Performance bond: $5,000 per club due upon signing
  • Player-level costs vary by individual club and include coaching fees, field rental, Trace iD, GA league fees, referee costs, and showcase participation

Player Pathway

DPL Open → DPL → ASPIRE → Girls Academy (Top Tier) → College / Professional

Key pathway features:

  • Promotion opportunity: Top-performing ASPIRE clubs can earn promotion to the GA top tier
  • College recruiting: Access to Regional and National Showcases with college coach attendance
  • Development bridge: Provides meaningful competitive experience for players not yet at GA top-tier level
  • Talent identification: GA scouts use ASPIRE competition to identify players for promotion

Economics

Club-Level Costs:

  • $1,000/team league fee ($6,000 per club for 6 age group teams)
  • $5,000 performance bond (refundable)
  • Total club investment: ~$11,000 upfront

Family-Level Costs: Determined by individual clubs; typically include coaching fees, goalkeeper training, league carding, practice field rental, technology (Trace iD), league fees, referee costs, and showcase travel. Expected to be comparable to or slightly below GA top-tier costs.

Revenue Model: League fees from clubs fund DPL-managed operations; showcase events generate additional revenue; sponsorship and branding through the GA ecosystem.

Champions (Last 5 Years)

ASPIRE launched in February 2025 for the 2025-26 season. No championship history exists yet. The first ASPIRE National Championships at each age level (U13-U19) will conclude at the end of the 2025-26 season.

Current Trajectory

Brand New: ASPIRE is in its inaugural 2025-26 season with 120+ clubs. The platform fills a gap that the GA had lacked — a structured second tier that provides both competitive play and a clear promotion pathway.

DPL Integration: The DPL’s integration as ASPIRE’s operational partner is significant. The DPL had operated independently since 2018; its folding into the GA ecosystem consolidates the girls’ competitive landscape under fewer organizational umbrellas.

MLS Next Alliance Impact: The GA’s strategic alliance with MLS Next (December 2024) positions the entire GA ecosystem — including ASPIRE — as the girls-side counterpart to MLS Next for boys. This gives ASPIRE clubs indirect association with the MLS brand and professional pathway.

Competition with ECNL-RL: ASPIRE competes directly with the ECNL Regional League for second-tier girls’ clubs. Both offer regional competition with national championship opportunities and promotion to their respective top tiers.

Key Clubs

With 120+ clubs in the inaugural season, notable participants include GA member clubs entering second teams alongside standalone ASPIRE-only clubs. Specific club lists are available at girlsacademyleague.com. Recent additions include Michigan Stars Elite and Bend FC Timbers.

Industry Context

ASPIRE is notable for its role as an accessible entry point to the Girls Academy ecosystem:

  1. Lower barrier than GA: ASPIRE membership is less competitive to obtain and less expensive than a full GA slot, with a clear promotion pathway upward
  2. Girls programming credibility: ASPIRE membership signals elite-level girls programming, important for club marketing and family recruitment
  3. DPL relationship: ASPIRE operations are managed by the DPL; clubs in ASPIRE interact with DPL operationally for scheduling, showcases, and postseason
  4. Strategic pathway choice: For girls’ programming, clubs face a key decision between the ECNL-RL pathway and the GA ASPIRE pathway (or both), which shapes their competitive identity and recruiting positioning
