DPL (Development Player League)

Overview

The Development Player League is a national girls’ youth soccer league providing elite competition for U13—U19 players. Founded as a standalone girls’ development league, the DPL became the organizational foundation from which the Girls Academy was created in 2020. Today, the DPL operates as a tier-two feeder to the Girls Academy and manages the new GA ASPIRE platform.

Scale: 70+ clubs across 10+ conferences, 16,000+ players (MEDIUM, DPL website).

Mission: “Develop the player and empower the person in a purposeful and memorable environment.”

Structure

Tiers

The DPL operates a three-tiered membership program:

  1. Full Status — Highest competitive level, full league benefits
  2. Open — Mid-tier competition
  3. Futures — Entry-level development pathway

This is branded as the Emerging Talent Pathway, designed to support clubs at different competitive levels.

Conferences

10+ regional conferences organized geographically. Example (2025—26 Carolinas Conference): Augusta Arsenal (GA), Carolina Velocity (NC), Charleston SC (SC), Charlotte DA (NC), Charlotte Independence (NC), Fox Soccer Academy (NC), James Island Soccer (SC), Tormenta (GA), Triangle United (NC), Wake FC (NC).

Age Groups

U13, U14, U15, U16, U17, U19

Competition Format

  • Regular season conference play
  • The Summit: End-of-season championship event for qualifying teams in the U15—U19 age groups
  • Super Groups: National-level competition groupings for top DPL teams
  • Teams can qualify for the GA Champions League (top tier)

GA ASPIRE Partnership

In February 2025, the girls-academy launched ASPIRE as its tier-two league, managed by the DPL. This cements the DPL’s role as the official development pathway below the GA.

National Development League (NDL)

In 2024, the DPL collaborated with the Elite Academy League (EA) to launch the National Development League (NDL) for both boys and girls — a landmark expansion into co-ed competition.

Club Requirements

  • Merit-based participation requiring club and player evaluation
  • Clubs apply and must meet competitive standards
  • Rigorous coaching standards
  • Emphasis on player well-being including injury prevention and mental health
  • Players may participate in high school soccer (a key differentiator from the old Development Academy)

Player Pathway

The DPL sits below ecnl and girls-academy in the girls’ competitive hierarchy:

DPL/ASPIRE → Girls Academy → College / Professional

  • College exposure through DPL showcases and The Summit
  • Structured advancement from DPL to GA through the ASPIRE pathway
  • Strong college commitment rates (specific data not available)

Economics

Cost to Families

Estimated $4,000—$8,000/year including club fees and travel. Lower than top-tier ecnl or girls-academy due to more regional travel patterns.

Revenue Model

  • Club membership fees
  • Event entry fees (The Summit, showcases)
  • ASPIRE platform management fees

Current Trajectory

Evolving into a structured feeder system. Key dynamics:

  1. GA ASPIRE management: The DPL’s role managing ASPIRE cements its position in the girls’ development pyramid, but also makes it institutionally dependent on the GA
  2. NDL launch: The 2024 collaboration with Elite Academy League to create the National Development League for boys and girls represents significant expansion ambitions
  3. Identity question: As the DPL increasingly operates under the GA umbrella, its independent brand identity may diminish
  4. Geographic expansion: Conference count and club membership continue to grow
  5. Competition: Competes with ecnl-RL for the “tier two” girls’ market

Key Clubs

Notable DPL member clubs include:

  • Liverpool IA SoCal — Dominant championship force
  • Sunrise Sting — Florida-based power
  • Charlotte Independence — Carolinas Conference anchor
  • Triangle United — North Carolina standout
  • Hoover-Vestavia Soccer — Alabama-based, U16 champion
  • City SC San Diego — Southern California competitor
