Industry Context
The Seattle Sounders FC Academy operates the dominant MLS NEXT program in Washington State, with all three teams (U15, U16, U18) ranked in the top third of MLS Next standings through the 2025-26 season. The Academy’s recent investment track record has yielded concrete returns: three Youdan Trophy titles, over two dozen US Youth National Team call-ups, multiple Homegrown signings, and a national championship — results that position it among the stronger performing academies in the MLS NEXT West Division alongside RSL and LAFC.
The hiring of Craig Dalrymple from Inter Miami CF in 2024 signals continued institutional investment in professional development infrastructure. Dalrymple’s role as Head of Professional Player Development is specifically oriented toward bridging the Academy and the Sounders FC first team, accelerating the Homegrown pipeline. His prior experience overseeing 25 Homegrown elevations across Vancouver and Miami gives him a track record relevant to the Sounders’ stated goals.
Within the Washington state competitive landscape, the Sounders Academy coexists with a strong independent club ecosystem. crossfire-premier (ECNL Girls and Boys) and eastside-fc (with Sounders affiliation) represent the primary independent-club tiers serving the broader player base. The Eastside FC affiliation with the Sounders creates a structured bridge: Eastside FC players in the ECNL ecosystem are visible to Sounders scouts, enabling a managed talent identification pipeline from the community club tier into the MLS Academy at the appropriate age.
Shannon Murray, the USSF-credentialed Sounders Academy staff member, contributes to the national coaching education ecosystem — a relationship that gives the Sounders institutional connections at the US Soccer Federation level beyond the typical MLS club.
The Longacres campus in Renton and the use of starfire-sports-complex in Tukwila provide the Academy with multiple training and match venues across the south Seattle metro — important logistics for an organization fielding three age groups simultaneously across different weekly schedules.
